"I have eaten at King of the Roll at least 5 times since I moved to Portland last year, and every single time has been an excellent, perhaps even glowing experience. I have never waited to be seated for more than 60 seconds, and the waitresses always are warm and friendly. As atmosphere goes, I would say that it's about average. A nice red paint scheme, proper lighting, and a few decorative plants round out the relaxed vibe quite nicely. On to the food. The quality is excellent, in both taste and presentation. I usually go for sushi, but I did go for a bento box on one of my visits and I was very pleasantly surprised to note that the quantity of food was surprisingly high, particularly for the price. Ah, that's the best part. On one of my visits, a friend and I managed to stuff ourselves (with food to spare) for less than $25 total, including tip, tax, and drinks. The price of the maki rolls range between $2.75 for the excellent vegetarian offerings (amongst which my favorite is the sweet potato roll) and up to $10 for complicated combination plates. Amongst the impressively wide variety of sushi offerings, my favorite would have to be the cooked softshell crab. You must try this if you are there, you will be satisfied. Take it from me. I give it a 5/5, as the food quality is on par with places that are twice as expensive, and the service was top notch. I would always go here over Fuji's or Yosaku, hands down."

"Sushi Gen is my favorite Japanese sushi restaurant in Los Angeles and perhaps the world!!! I've been going to Sushi Gen for over 15 years. My favorite sushi cook – Kaz is still there and goes strong! I haven't done so much, but Kaz still remembers me. What I always do, in every Sushi restaurant, is Uni – Sea Urchin. Sometimes I get it with a raw quail egg yolk up to make it extra creamy. The University of Sushi Gen seems always very good. Another favorite – the halibut with the Ponzo sauce is also good. I also like the cheesy simple like Tamago and Inari. I know most people will get the huge shell, salmon, tuna, fat tuna. I like the one where you don't use soy sauce or wasabi. Make sure you go to a sushi restaurant that you sit at the bar. I don't like going with a big group, but with a bigger group, a table might be better. The sushi bar offers the interaction between you, your friend and the cook. I'm sure people will tell me they like others – like Matushia, Sasebune, etc., but for me. .Sushi Gen will be my personal favorite. Whatever. My proposal is when you go to any sushi – meet your sushi boss. And let him meet you. With a friendly sniper, he'll let you know what's good. . . and more importantly what is not. I pour my beer for them to drink and vice versa. But sometimes they can't drink. But what I do now would I buy and offer a few bottles of big beers – so they can drink after work. If you go to Sushi Gen, wait at least 1/2 hours for a table or sitting in the Sushi Bar. Come there early. One of the reasons I like sushi gene is that I once saw Japanese college sumo team eating there. If the Japanese College Sumo team picks up sushi gene to eat in Los Angeles, then you know it must be good."
