"The Hornli Hutte is about a hours trek from the Schonbiel; there are a couple places to eat, we chose the Schwarzee Hotel/Restaurant which as about way or a picnic is also do able. The last two hour are up, up with some...switch backs and narrow paths that are supplemented with wires or ropes. Hornli is also know as Matternhorn Base Camp is located at the base of the mountain and the starting point for those climbing.. It was recently redone to celebrate the anniversary of the first ascent and the rehab is striking. A huge balcony looks up the mtn and the inside dinning/gathering room with floor to ceiling windows is modern, functional and provides the same breath taking view as the out side balcony. Toilets, running hot water and showers are inside, our room slept By far the most comfortable with many amenities not available in the other huttes: in side facilities, hot water, lights all night. Dinner was communal, family style: squash soup, spaetzle, goulash, green beans and a delicious apple strudel--seconds were offered. This meal was as good as one would get in down town Zermatt at many of its restaurants. However, the star was the views of the mtn from the dinning room. Breakfast was juice, cereal, instant coffee, tea, bread, jam, cereal, yogurt, meat/cheese. We booked pension: extras were water, wine, grappa that bill was CHF--beginning to see a trend here?"
