"we are norweger and were on business trip to toronto and were told rs was the place for eating and drinking. now, took a taxi (cost us more than 90 cad and past several sportables on the way) and. rs at 8 o'clock on Friday. we are two balls in the late 40s/early 50s, smartly dressed. my colleague is white while I am from Southeast Asia (live 50 years in norway) on the door says this lady: what are you doing here? his closed event, only to invite. I knew it was nonsense and couldn't help her smile and she knew I knew it. when I worked as a booze in my youth, it was easy to see that they didn't want us as a client. I didn't want to argue and just wanted to go to another place, but my colleague still wanted to go on rs (because one of his friends had told him that it was a must-see in toronto.) So, I said we're just here for eating and drinking that we are not from Canada, we are tourist. then the people at the door asked if they wanted to drink or eat. we answered: both, but first food. I stressed that we were just going to eat and drink and then go. we were finally let in (here saw that everyone didn't want to let us in.) Of course it wasn't a closed event (it was just a baseball game between toronto blue jays and another team.) we ordered to eat what was nothing special, but pizza was (4 ok) but hey, his sportable, not a restaurant, so we didn't expect to eat excellent. the place was less than 1/5. we went after eating and drinking well and went. service at the table was good. we just want to know why the people at the door didn't want us to be customers? we were not older than many of the customers. we didn't smell bad. we were not dressed badly. was it because I'm colored? I hope not, but I can't find a reasonable reason. we will soon be back in toronto, could someone give us advice about places in the city that do not discriminate so? we are good clients; we don't have to, we eat a lot, we drink a lot and we'll tap well."

"Update 11/10/2019: Earlier this year, I had a face to face chat with Tania who is the co-owner of the restaurant along with her husband. It was regarding the review I wrote that I am now updating with that conversation in mind as well as knowing she will read this. I do live in Hyde Park where this restaurant is located on that note too. To the owner: Our conversation is why I upgraded the rating to 4 stars but in the subsequent visits since then, I saw no reason to make it 5 stars and more so since my favorite menu item Pastrami sub) was discontinued. For everyone else: This restaurant has no affiliation with the similarly named River St. Grille on the other end of River St. As noted above, if you want to speak to the owner or her husband Jose you need only ask. One or both would be happy to addresss any concerns or problems with your order. The menu boasts your staple American and Italian comfort foods but starting about five years ago, they started adding more things to the menu. Each year a few new items were added to the menu since then and every now and then they do have special deals on select menu items to draw in customers. One thing I have noticed in few Hyde Park Neighborhood Facebook groups as well as in some of the reviews here is to customers, there isn't a problem until they personally have a problem and then it's the worst place ever. Like I said above, ask to speak to the owner if there is a problem with your order. At least one of them if not both is always there at any given time. I have sampled almost everything they have to offer and in some cases, more than a few times. I'm not sold on the pizzas personally and I have tried quite a few. It's more personal preference than anything else. The subs are good to great hot and cold. The meat is generous so if you want to taste something other than meat between the bread, be sure to say so. I would put their subs ahead of Cappy's down the street on the corner of Fairmount Ave. and Truman Parkway) hands down because of the portions alone. The dinners are a bit of a mixed bag overall. The portions across the board are fine but the quality for price is another matter entirely. I have sampled almost all them personally. The chicken wings are obviously fresh wings and hand-breaded before they're fried. My favorite dessert items are the Cheesecake with strawberry topping .50 Cents Exrta for the strawberry topping) and Tres Leches which is clearly made in house). That's it for food. Now on to service. 95% of the time I dine in at the restaurant. The handful of times I ordered delivery, I received my order within an hour. Everything is cooked or made to order. Nothing is prepped in advance and this is why things take a while. It's NOT a fast food restaurant so if don't want to wait, call your order in advance. I have had times where I would make an order over the phone, walk there and it's either ready or being boxed when I arrive. My house is a 20 minute walk on that note. It is a known restaurant but at the same time I feel like they could do more in the area of advertising if they wanna compete with neigboring restaurants. Being one of 3 non-chain options in the area goes both ways and its staying power speaks to its overall quality. I'll end with this: If you are not satisfied with your order, ask to speak with the owner. Your satisfaction is their only concern."
