"This is a tough place to review! I was torn between 3 and 4 stars and wish I could give 3.5. It was so hit and miss from the get go. We made a reservation, but stood at the door for at least 7 minutes before being greeted. It looked like they were understaffed for how busy they were, although not very busy, they had what looked like two or three servers for the entire restaurant, and no dedicated bartender. Our appetizer salads arrived before our drinks did. The drinks were good and the food was good, but the quality of service needs to be improved. Our server was very sweet and friendly but clearly new to the restaurant, not great at prioritizing tasks and even though I am from the industry and understand that servers need to eat when they have the chance, it dampens the experience to watch your server sit down at the bar near your table to eat her food when you are needing service. The food itself was delicious; it’s hard to go wrong with Italian food, but it was classically prepared and the portion sizes were generous. Another note to mention is the restaurant is in need of some deep cleaning. We noticed thick dust on many surfaces, stains in our menus, and the men’s bathrooms were very poorly maintained. All in all, not a horrible experience, but with so many other Italian restaurants to visit in the city we are unlikely to be back the next time we visit."

"A Second Chance at Aura: A Phenomenal Culinary Experience Although my first experience at Aura was not great, I decided to give it another chance since it was their first week of operation. On my second visit, I was accompanied by my business partner, her fiancé, and a good friend who is a DJ. From the moment we arrived, the waiter recognized me from 515alive and kosmic kingdom and inquired about our events. It was a pleasant surprise and set the tone for the exceptional service we received, along with the excellent food and inviting atmosphere. Aura has a similar upscale vibe to Trostel's Dish, but the menu items are a bit more substantial. Every dish we ordered was well-prepared and delicious, making it a perfect spot for a quiet night out for a couple or a gathering of friends. The long and spacious bar, along with the booth and table-style seating, make it an ideal venue for larger groups. The menu itself is unique, with something for everyone. We were all delighted with the inventive cocktails and phenomenal food options, leaving us excited to have this new concept in Des Moines. This has definitely become a regular spot for us. The small plate selections on the menu were perfect for sharing, and we also enjoyed some of the regular plates and group options. The food quality and presentation were impressive, and coupled with the excellent service, it made for a memorable dining experience. All in all, I am glad I gave Aura another chance and was not disappointed. It is a must-try for anyone looking for a phenomenal culinary experience in a chic, inviting atmosphere. I highly recommend Aura and can't wait to return."
