"The butcher made a point to tell me and my mom (we are both black Americans) that we couldn’t use food stamps to pay for our meats.I’m not exactly sure why of the customers there he chose to point that out to us? But we just said ok, no problem sir. We aren’t using food stamps. In addition, I brought in my pet and he said to me, do you not read? The front says NO PETS. Now I admit that was my mistake. I live in NYC and pets are allowed almost everywhere so I was just operating as normal. But that comment, especially after the initial impression, I just gave my grocery items to the front desk and politely told them we would not be patronizing the establishment. It’s not what you say, it’s HOW you say it.We were happy to find a store that sold ethnic/Spanish foods but as a result there should be an understanding by ALL of the staff how to be sensitive to different people of all races and promote an environment of inclusion."
