"Brass Tacks isn't the best sandwich place in Portland (I'm looking at you, Lardo why'd you have leave Williams?! , but it's definitely one of my favorite sandwich spots in NoPo. I live super close to an East Side Deli, but after eating at Brass Tacks, I'll make the drive if I'm craving a good sandwich. Why? Although the portion of meat and filling is less substantial at Brass Tacks relative to East Side, I think the ratio of filling to bread, and filling to filling within the sandwich is much more balanced, making for an overall more enjoyable bite. I ordered the Turkey to the Limit sandwich as a pressed panini, which came with roasted turkey, mayo, tomato jam, avocado, lettuce, and provolone on a ciabatta bread. The meat wasn't fully warmed, given the pressed technique, but I liked getting the cheese melted and bread warm. To put it simply, this was a well executed sandwich. The turkey was moist, the portion of avocado was decent (although you can never really have too much avocado on a sandwich, am I right? , and most importantly, the tomato jam was really something special. I've had tomato jams in the past that were much too gelatinous and sweet. However, this tomato jam reminded me of butter chicken curry sauce. There was a super subtle heat to it and was packed with rich spices. Brass Tacks should seriously bottle that stuff. Although the menu is rather limited (four meat sandwiches and four vegan sandwiches, of which the latter isn't really my jam , my turkey sandwich was delicious enough for me to give this place another go."
