"I decided to drop by Daichan on Halloween because I was craving sushi, and thankfully, it was conveniently close to my place. I also heard the prices were quite affordable, and after building up some confidence this year, I felt ready to dive in.
My friend and I were seated at the bar, but to my disappointment, all the fish was pre-sliced! Bummer! Unsure of what to do, I ordered a pitcher of Kirin and watched the other diners. After finishing my first mug, I joined in on the sushi plate snatching and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the fish – it was actually quite good!
- Maguro (tuna): nice, thick cuts and surprisingly fresh for being pre-sliced.
- Sake (salmon): also very thick and quite good.
- Hamachi (yellowtail): just okay – not great, but not bad.
- Uni (sea urchin): pretty good, which was a nice surprise.
- Ankimo (monkfish liver): just fine, but lacking flavor.
- Chicken karaage: fresh, but also a bit bland.
You might be wondering why I gave this place four stars despite some of the dishes being just okay. Well, it’s because Bruce, the sushi chef (itamae), was absolutely hilarious! I bought him a pitcher and poured him a beer, followed by a cheerful "kanpai!" We continued alternating pitchers and mugs all night. So much for a relaxing evening with sushi and an early bedtime!
We ended up having a blast! Bruce was behind the sushi bar making sushi with a fun twist, and he'd stumble sideways every time he tried to walk. It was such a great time! I now understand why the fish is pre-sliced – it’s to keep Bruce safe when he gets a bit tipsy with the customers!
In summary, Daichan is a fantastic place for decent sushi and an unforgettable night of drinking with the sushi chef!"
