"At these prices all dishes must at least be good; however, two of the three courses were quite bad. The service was very knowledgeable and outstanding. My Scallops appetizer was the best I 've ever had (I grew up on the Atlantic Ocean). But the meal plummeted from that point. The Alligator soup was so spicy it lacked taste. Moreover, it was 99% minced potatoes and roughly 1% shreds of Alligator, or something that wasn 't potatoes. A relatively easy steak dish, Prime Rib was a disaster. I ordered my Prim Rib medium rare, but two extraordinarily thin slices were served well done (my wife 's filet was ordered medium but came out rare/medium rare. I suggested to the staff that the thin slices had been under a hot lamp for so long that they would not be able to find meat a piece that was medium rare and that they were going to have to slice into the Prime Rib to get me a properly cooked piece. Think about that. An upscale restaurant is slicing its Prime Ribs well in advance of serving and leaving the thin slices under hot lamps where they cannot possibly be served at the desired doneness and will also be dry and lacking flavor. Fine restaurants that serve prime rib on a regular basis, place the prime rib on a cart and wheel it to the table where it is to be served. It is only at that time that the ordered slice is cut from the Prime Rib. Not unlike a brisket, the thinner skinnier end tends to be more well done and the fatter tail end tends to be more rare. Despite billing itself as ABQ 's premier dining establishment, Vernon 's has not learned this easy trick. Either that or they are being penny-wise-pound foolish and don 't care if they can serve their prime rib at the desired temperature. Likewise, my wife 's steak was undercooked. But rather than bringing my wife a fresh, properly cooked filet, the cook staff served my wife two charred ends from the two sides of the filet. Vernon thus put the loss on the customer rather than themselves. AVOID VERNON 'S!"

"Hot Mess BBQ Soul Food is a small store, what we call a mom and pop store. Basically, a cashier and a kitchen person run this place. We ordered food from this store twice. The first time we got some ribs and today, we picked up some brisket. All I cansay is they have some good food. We found the soul in their food. We must support small stores run by minorities that aremaking a genuine effort at hard work and producing good food. Both times, they were fast. They have a small dining area. Pleasedon?t expect anything free. They are new and meat is not cheap. We must give them an opportunity to turn a profit, becomesuccessful and make a longtime presence in our community. We really need more small businesses and mom and pop stores. Smallbusinesses are a fundamental pillar of the US economy and Albuquerque?s economy. Some of the reviewers stated that the food didnot meet expectations. This happens. We fall in love with something we ate somewhere or something we ate for a long time. Thatalone does not make the food at Hot Mess BBQ Soul Food bad. It may take some of us time to appreciate the taste of a newplace. Soul food, like any other food, comes in varying tastes and shapes. They can still find a place within our tastesystem. Overall, a great experience. I wish these guys all the luck possible to become very successful and be a longtime memberwithin our community."

"What was ordered; Escargot, Special: Oysters on a half shell, Henry IV, Ribeye Tip: There is free 2 hr parking in front of the restaurant so do a loop to check before paying in the lot. Dress code: didn't seem to be one, there was a broad range of outfits. Atmosphere: When we entered there were SO MANY FLIES and some bees, just buzzing around the front door inside and out with nothing to deter them. Escargot: Amazing, the shallot butter was delicious and the fresh baked, crusty, sour dough rolls were made fresh before being brought to the table and sopped up the sauce perfectly. We did get it without mushrooms due to an allergy. Oysters: This was a special so won't always be available but they were high quality and delicious. My partner had the Ribeye, and thought it was good and cooked to a perfect medium rare but it also wasn't anything special, he felt like he could've gotten the same at Black Angus or Longhorn. I had the Henry IV (bacon wrapped filet mignon, artichoke) without the béarnaise sauce, ordered medium rare but it was more like medium, there was also a toothpick fully embedded in my meat so when I was eating it the next day I got a bite of wood. I wish there were more sauce options but the meat was well seasoned. Service: Great, they were attentive without hovering and our water glasses were always full. Not exactly the most accessible for mobility aides or larger bodies as it is in old town."
