"Discovered by chance on our first visit to Wernigerode in 2008 (to visit the HSB railway, see separate review). Excellent local and authentic German restaurant, full of locals. Rather formal when first approached to make a booking (even though we have a German-speaker in our group). Clearly exists on regular clientele and does not need passing trade like us. Menu is all in German but clear enough. Separate pages for Pork, Game and Fish dishes though we thought not many beef main courses. Not a criticism. The wine list has most items priced very closed together and available by the glass as well (about 11-14 Euro per bottle in Feb 2013). Only curious practice to English diners is the regular...

Very nice carving. Well prepared and fresh. Easy access and beautiful location. The staff was very friendly, friendly and visited.

We had food here without research and what luck! Quietly busy with German so thought it must be okay. We had to ask if they took visas, what they did. The waitress was very helpful even if her English was limited. I had trout and my wife had escalope. Both where very nice and with 2 big beers the bill was 34 euros that we thought was quietly reasonable. Beautiful meal and beautiful atmosphere.

The hotel is very well situated in the middle of Wernigerode. The room was very large modern and clean, excellent for the price. Outside of the room was a very nice corner with a large table and seats, so that late in the evening we could drink the rest of the wine we purchased in the restaurant. Across from the hotel is a fantastic beer house, where we spent a Saturday evening. Good music and awesome food.
