"Le Relais Princesse Marie Leczinska, located in a tiny town in the Alsace region of France, is worth seeking out not only for the cooking by Chef Okamoto but also to watch a single woman, Madame Okamoto, managed a 20 cover restaurant alone with great charm and efficiency. She puts to shame restaurants with wait staffs who can't manage to refill a wine glass or deliver a dish with elan.Despite the surname of the Chef the cuisine is definitely a reflection of the Alsace region. Since we were there for lunch the only option was the Menu du Jour. Actually there were two options of the Menu, mainly a rif on a single theme. We opted for the full menu and being nosy I saw all the other diners did the same on the day we were there.Aperitifs were requested and delivered along with an amuse bouche of small coffee cup of mushroom cappuccino: a frothy milky topping on a hearty mushroom soup. First course: a slice of Quiche Lorraine. I don't think I've ever eaten this dish in the land from whence it originated. So much better, lighter and more flavourful, than the versions found on menus in other towns and countries. The quiche was accompanied by a lightly dressed salad of local leaves. The main course on the day we were there was Pintade (Guinea fowl), and, I will confess here, one of my favourites. Believe me I've had many Guinea Fowl over time but Chef Okamoto's was a delight to the eye as well as the palate. The dish was a vision of a crispy skin breast with the filet pulled out separately. The wing roasted sat on a small spoonful of red cabbage with green beans and a dollop of excellent pommes puree. Madame had by this time served and removed plates from the other diners and brought us our wine. We opted for dessert which was a nicely done Green Tea Creme Brulee. It takes a lot of skill to infuse flavour in to a creme brulee, flavour that has to overcome the dense fattiness of the cream and eggs and beat back the caramelized sugar topping. This was an accomplished version of a classic. Along with coffee was a gelled coconut pudding topped with a mango puree, a couple of light and fluffy Madeleine. Coffee followed. In the past I've not mentioned in these reviews the costs of the meals. This time I feel I have to. The entire menu outlined above cost 14.90 Euros per person, with beer, wine and coffee extra. The a la carte menu, only available for dinner, is more expensive but the lunch time menu is worth seeking out this restaurant. As for Princesse Maria Leczinska, you'll have to look that name up for yourself."
