"The first thing we noticed is that the online menu is much different than their actual in-restaurant menu, very much reduced. When we pointed this out to the waitress, she said the online menu was being worked on...fair enough... Also, the online site said it was one of the few restaurants that did not have a corkage charge...so we brought a bottle of wine. The waitress told us that there is a corkage charge of $25 per bottle...so we didn't open our bottle and ordered a martini and a glass of wine. When I asked about Happy Hour, I was told that it was from 8pm-10pm...then was told that they normally close up about 830pm on weeknights...sheesh... The martini was served in the smallest martini glass I've ever seen and they appeared to forget about the glass of wine, we received that about 20 minutes later, well into our appetizers. The sauce on my pizza was not as tasty as the one I recalled from a previous visit several months prior...but could that have been the result of our increasing disappointment in the place? Maybe... I had mentioned that we were celebrating a birthday in our reservation but no mention was made of it by the concierge or the wait staff...it just wasn't important to them I guess. We also noticed that there were only about 6 people in our half of the restaurant. When we asked why so few, we were told it was still early and it was only Thursday....we're thinking there are other reasons, some mentioned above, that may account for the lack of patrons. We wish the biz well because we don't want any to suffer but sometimes a restaurant is responsible for it's own condition and popularity. I'm afraid we'll choose a different pre-show restaurant next time."

"this restaurant came recommended by a few of my coworkers ! I pass this restaurant on my way home from work and thought it looked very charming. our table was directly across from the hostess stand there were four of us one of our 3 tables was extremely uneven , and wobbled so badly that we couldn 't put our dirty cocktail glasses or bread basket on it for fear they would fall off. The waiter asked to take our orders w/o asking if we wanted any starters we had to ask him it that was ok....he said , yea whatever you want to do there were only a handful of people in the restaurant on Sauturday evening so it wasn 't as though he was crushed w/ customers. our meal was ok at best. We wanted to order dessert but when we ordered coffee and Capuchinos, we were told there was no cream to make a capuchino and coffee was ok if we wanted our coffee black. He said ' we were hit hard w/ PITT graduation and our delevery wont be here until next week. He said they didn 't have cream for days we were surprised no one went to a local store to stock up until their delivery arrived I used the ladies room before we left and it was dirty and smelled the floor was filthy on our way out , I noticed the tile floor was very dirty, mostly near the hostess stand and the tile floor near the door on the way out of the restaurant was also filthy we were very disappointed! cannot go back ! if the floors are noticeably filthy, can only imagine what the kitchen looks like and other areas not in plain site!"

"Amazing food at Scopa Italian Roots restaurant this week. Hidden away in the streets of Venice with no signage, you might miss this Italian treasure if you're not in the know. My appetizers included Amberjack Crudo with farmer’s market cherry tomatoes, mixed olives, hearts on fire, basil oil, pickled shallots, the Fried Calamari with squid ink and lemon, and Crispy Squash Blossoms stuffed with ricotta, mozzarella, tomato and chili. The appetizers were all phenomenal. I started with the Amberjack which had the most attractive presentation. It was cool, light and refreshing and the touch of olive was divine. The calamari was definitely one for the books with its crispy, delicious batter and unusual look. The black squid ink added an element of fun to a traditional dish and the squash blossoms were delightful. They were hot, crispy and stuffed with mouthwatering cheeses. For my entrées I had the Veal Chop Milanese and a whole Branzino with fennel frond, lemon, basil with a side of Eggplant Caponata. The veal chop was legendary. The meat was tender inside and the breading was seasoned perfectly with a crisp outside. Each bite was better and better. I can honestly say after this experience that a veal chop is my all time favorite cut of meat. The Branzino was magnificent, presented  beautifully and cooked with love. The eggplant caponata was the perfect accompaniment to the dish. I throughly enjoyed each and every dish at Scopa Italian Roots. "I recently visited il Centro Alimentari/Salumeria, a charming a small neighborhood Italian pasta shop selling fresh foods, imported pantry goods, and an eatery. I was impressed by the warm and welcoming atmosphere, as well as the excellent service and delicious, delicate, mouthfeel foods. You can take out orders, order online before arriving, get catering services, or eat at the salumi counter or outside seating area. Upon arriving, my husband and I were enthralled at the menu, how could we order everything as every dish read with five-star ingredients. Freshly made artisanal focaccia panini's, handmade pasta dishes, and so much more that it felt as if we were at a cozy culinary gem in Bologna, Italy. Chef Darren serves Italian classics and is intent on creating dishes inspired by Northern Italy. There are all sorts of imported provisions, Italian natural wines and specialties. I ordered the Tonnarelli cacio e pepe with fresh made pasta whole crushed peppercorns, pecorino of the highest quality, another delicacy was my husband's order of a panini capra which was served in the freshly baked artisanal focaccia, with a fig of rosemary on top, the prosciutto di parma made from high-quality pork leg slowly cured and aged for 18 months. Emilia Romagna is one of the differentiating factors that set Prosciutto di Parma apart from all other hams. The rolling hills around Parma create an ideal environment that includes the Apennine Mountains, which offer crisp breezes that flow from the Adriatic Sea and a distinct microclimate that gives Prosciutto di Parma its uniquely sweet flavor. Along with whipped goat cheese, red pepper marmaletta, truffle honey which combined had savory, refined, melt in your mouth flavors that were really lovely. The server, Jordon was kind enough to explain what was in our order, which we greatly appreciated. Overall, I had a fantastic experience at il Centro. The combination of great service and delicious food make this establishment a must-visit for anyone who want the best Italian food in Burlington, and all of North Carolina hands down. I highly recommend trying Chef's Darren handmade bronze die extruded pasta, which really absorbed sauce effectively, improving the mouthfeel and flavor of his pasta dishes. On a visit with my friend the Chef introduced us to Gnocco fritto or spoken as crescentine in Bologna. The dumplings were flaky on the outside, plump, soft, pillows of warm dough that Chef Darren created to taste like puffed clouds from heaven. He of course added melt in your mouth 25 month, Coppa, Mortadella, prosciutto speciale. On the side in metal cups were delicately cooked onions and pomodoro pelati tomatoes which were sweet, savory, and lends itself to be a great addition to the dish, along with whipped creamy goats' cheese that added more complexity to the taste. Chef's Darren's Gnocco fritto is a specialty of unparalleled goodness which was a real highlight of our visit! I highly recommend them, and give them 5 stars and a yum! Come hungry and leave with extra goodies, it is well worth the trip. If you're looking for an authentic taste of Bologna, il Centro is definitely the place to go! We took home some prosciutto puffs that were so fluffy, airy, with a blended of egg, prosciutto, cheese, and rosemary, and marinated olives castelvetrano, taggiasca, picholine olives, fennel pollen, bay leaf, citrus. We returned the next day and ordered more food to go. I could eat there every day as I know the menu will always impress my palate. Chef Darren's passion for food comes with the desire to prepare the finest, freshest ingredients, and we are very grateful for his commitment as I was transport back to Italy."
