"I have truly fallen in love with far western Virginia and all the amazing small towns just off of I 81, and Abingdon is definitely on my list of favs. And on my visit to Abingdon, I stumbled upon White Birch Food Juice and I am so happy I did! The Vibe: This is an Uber cute place with seating outside. I could tell alot of locals go there and hang out. Service: Service was great, super friendly and attentive. I got alot of great suggestions and enjoyed chatting about the area. Food: The food was really good. I had the Birch Power Bowl Rice quinoa topped with broccoli, chicipeas, seasonal root vegetables, dried cranberries, seasonal nuts, Ziegenwald goat cheese, and a maple tahini dressing. I also added avocado and a fried egg to the bowl. The bowl was super satisfying and delicious. My only complaint was the raw walnuts. I would have preferred toasted walnuts or another type of nut. I also had the Golden Milk Latte which was surprisingly delicious! (Wolf Hills coffee, house made oat milk, turmeric paste, agave cinnamon, coconut oil). A cool feature is that they have a full bar and some interesting cocktails. So if you are ever driving along I 81 and wondering where to stop head to Abingdon and stop by White Birch Food Juice. Box Hill Pizzaria Carryout

Box Hill Pizzaria Carryout

Pizza • Greek • Italian • Sandwiches

"Good pizza, disappointing crab cakes. Update Sep 21, 2014 Grade: B-/C+ On our last visit we had the pizza and enjoyed it. After reading about their legendary crab cakes, we wanted to try them this time. Sadly, we were very disappointed with them. The waitress said that the broiled crab cakes were better than the fried so we tried those. Large, at 8 oz. and full of jumbo lump meat, that was the best part of them. The peak of mine had gotten charred while the inside was only just warm. The mix of the crab and mayo was a little too runny and it was lacking in flavor, with little or no Old Bay or other spice mixture. For that matter, the tartar sauce was pretty runny and the cole slaw was plain, too. Next time, we're going for the pizza. Grade: B Box Hill is an odd marriage of pizza, Italian standards, gyros and Greek specialties, and crab cakes that locals eagerly endorse. The overwhelming aroma of crab meat greets you as you come through the door, entering on a path that is separated from the kitchen by partial glass. The dining rooms lay beyond, one featuring two booths flanked by the restrooms (which provides the aroma of air freshener with that of your food). Box Hill's menu is involved, but we'd heard that they had good pizza so we went in that direction. I'm pretty glad that we did. We ordered a small with pepperoni and onions...and several minutes later, our waitress returned to see if we were ready to order. Fortunately, she quickly reoriented and remembered that she'd taken and submitted our choice. Keeping in mind our frequent encounters with substandard pizza in Northern Virginia, this was pretty good. Its crust had interest, crispy without being overly dry or chewy and with good flavor. There was a hint of sweetness in the sauce that worked well, and the strings of raw onion were sweet and flavorful. The pepperoni was lackluster, however, almost flavorless against the other ingredients. In all, this is much better than any pizzeria that delivers to us. Maybe we'll try the crab cakes next time."

Rita's Italian Ice

Rita's Italian Ice

Cafés • Italian • Desserts • Ice cream

"Rita 's Italian Ice and Frozen Custard is a large chain of dessert shops with locations across America. This was actually mine and my wife 's first time trying this place surprisingly but we were amazed with what they had to offer! They offer a variety of Italian Ice made with real fruit juices and flavors. If you 're not familiar with Italian Ice it 's similar to a snow cone but with finer ice and richer flavor. The atmosphere was cute and had a modern yet carnival looking design on the outside and the people working there were very friendly and wanted to help and seemed happy to be there. The desserts were tasty and different. If you haven 't had the chance to try them out, do it! I had the Ice Sampler and got s 'mores, Orange, Unicorn and Dragonfruit. My wife had their seasonal Ocean Splash with custard and sprinkles with gummy sharks. The orange ice was bursting with flavor and basically tasted like an orange juice icee. It was very fresh and refreshing. The Dragonfruit was also refreshing and had good flavor as well. The unicorn was interesting because it 's a mix of like 5 or 6 flavors and at first I thought it tasted like grape, then bubble gum, then cotton candy but I just couldn 't put my finger on it! Still, it was delightful to try. I got the s 'mores because I wanted to see how they were attempting to get the flavor into shaved ice and they did a decent job. It was the least favorite for me out if the four but I still ate it all. They use a vanilla and marshmallow flavoring in the ice and add mini chocolate chips in the mix. I was saddened to see that they didn 't add any graham crackers on top or something because that is essential to s 'mores! My wife 's Ocean Splash ice had the flavor of cotton candy or bubble gum to me but they were attempting to have a tropical flavor with it but I didn 't ask what the flavor actually was. The custard that they add goes on the bottom of the cup as well as on top. Their custard is velvety and almost fluffy. Very light and smooth. It had good flavor and went well with the ice. We had to go back to Rita 's a few days later because we really liked it and I got the Reese 's peanut butter mudslide concentrate and the wife got a pear and mango ice cup. My mudslide was good and had plenty of Reese 's and lots of hot fudge on top but looked kind of messy and didn 't really look like the picture haha. I had her ice and their fruit ices are what they are good at because the fruit flavor just comes through so well and it 's so refreshing on a hot day. The prices are reasonable at Rita 's and it 's definitely a place we would visit again if we ever need a tasty Italian Ice fix! Atmospheres are great, service has been good at both locations and flavors don 't disappoint. Can 't wait to go back! Follow me for more reviews across America ?????"
