"Stick with the hot sausage po boys. I am a New Orleans native and have been frequenting Gene's for many moons. I see alot of people on here giving Gene's flack. 1st off, YES, it is definetly a dive in a sketchy part of town and NO the workers are not particulary cheery. However, they are open 24 hours, (very few places in New Orleans are). At this place the hot sausage po boy is the star of the show, the french bread is crusty on the outside with just the right amount of chewiness, the patties are spicy but not too spicy, if you ask for it dressed you will get mayo, lettuce and pickles, they do not serve tomatoes and never did from what I remember. I hear the hamburger po boys are good too....
